Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart: Rift

Jon Burton is the founder of Traveler's Tales. The British developer studio has worked exclusively on Lego video games in recent years.

The Possibility of Queer Abstraction by David J. Getsy

A current video on his YouTube channel is dedicated to the Action Platformer Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. There he explains why the RIFT mechanics would theoretically also possible on the outdated PlayStation 3.

The assertion that the travel mechanics would have been feasible without the SSD of the PlayStation 5, he refers to misleading. The game material shown in advance presents amazing sequences in which Ratchet and clank moves over between different worlds. This change of worlds were linked to action-rich passages.

Only short sections with limited gameplay

In reality, it is only limited to intermediate sequences or very short sections with limited gameplay. According to Burton, the surroundings were most easily implemented in the so-called tail dimensions because small areas with limited scenery are hiding behind it. It is no more than a kind of sky dome, a few platforms, beautiful lighting and generic objects to see.

Thus, even on older hardware, not much storage space would be necessary. Especially the generic objects would lead to the achieved charging time.

In general, however, Burton is fully convinced of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. In the comments he adds: I think the game is great, and Insomniac is a great developer team. The SSD is fully exploited and allows fantastic looking game with incredible graphics. The only one I contradict is the marketing. This claims that the gameplay is only possible on the PS5 with an SSD. This is clearly not true, and the video explains why. But Insomniac rocks.
